5 Reasons to Have a Book Tasting in Your High School English Class

Sharing is caring!

Are you looking for a way to get your high school students excited about reading? A book tasting is an engaging and interactive way to introduce students to new books and help them find one they genuinely want to read. Much like a food tasting, a book tasting allows students to “sample” different books for a few minutes at a time before selecting one to read in full. If you haven’t tried this in your classroom yet, here are five compelling reasons why you should!

1. Encourages Student Choice

One of the biggest reasons students lose interest in reading is because they feel forced to read books they don’t enjoy. A book tasting empowers students by letting them explore a variety of books and choose one that excites them. When students have ownership over their reading, they are more likely to engage with the text and develop a love for literature. Book Tastings can provide the perfect lead-in for students to choose a book for book clubs, literature circles, and independent novel studies.

2. Creates a Fun and Engaging Atmosphere

A book tasting transforms the classroom into a lively, café-like setting where students can “sample” books in a relaxed and social way. You can set the mood with tablecloths, soft music, a “fireplace” on the SmartBoard, and menus listing book genres. I also like to greet students wearing an apron to look like a Barista. This breaks the routine of traditional lessons and makes reading feel like an adventure rather than an assignment.

3. Exposes Students to a Wide Range of Books

Many students stick to what they already know when choosing books. A book tasting introduces them to genres and authors they might not normally consider. Whether it’s historical fiction, science fiction, graphic novels, or contemporary YA, students get a chance to broaden their literary horizons and discover new favourites. As well, some teachers are restricted to the same books each semester because of set-in-stone syllabi, or budget issues, so Book Tastings are a great way to incorporate other voices into your curriculum.

4. Builds Reading Stamina and Interest

When students are given time to preview a book before committing to it, they are more likely to find one that keeps their interest. A book tasting also provides structured time for students to practice independent reading in short bursts, helping them build stamina for longer reading sessions.

5. Encourages Meaningful Discussions

A book tasting naturally sparks conversations between students about what they are reading. They can share their first impressions, make recommendations to peers, and discuss why certain books appeal to them. This fosters a reading community in your classroom where students feel comfortable discussing literature in an organic way.

Final Thoughts

A book tasting is an easy yet powerful way to re-energize your classroom and get students excited about reading. By giving them the freedom to explore books in a low-pressure setting, you increase the chances of them finding a book they’ll truly enjoy. Try it out, and you might just see your students develop a newfound enthusiasm for literature!
